American Board of Medical Specialties Recognizes Fellowship Trained Mohs Surgeons

Skin Cancer Care Specialists | November 2, 2018

Mohs Surgery, Dr. Noah Weisberg, Jupiter FL

The American Board of Dermatology recently announced that the application to offer Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (MDS) as a subspecialty of dermatology was approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) on October 26, 2018.

The process for the approval of MDS began earlier this year and went through a public comment period throughout the summer where stakeholders and diplomates discussed the possibility and benefits of the new subspecialty. While micrographic dermatologic surgery is well established in the field of dermatology, the fellowship is one of only 140+ Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) fellowships that lacks the acknowledgement and validation that a subspecialty certificate offers. When asked why the subspecialty certification for MDS was approved, the ABD replied, “We believe that the time has come to recognize the efforts of these fellowship trained dermatologists.”

While certification for the new MDS subspecialty is not required for dermatologists trained in Mohs surgery, only those who take and pass the certification exam will become officially certified by the ABD in the subspecialty MDS.

As a Fellowship trained Mohs surgeon who has performed Mohs surgery over 26,000 times, Dr. Noah Weisberg and the entire staff at Skin Cancer Care Specialists are very happy about the subspecialty approval. The ABD estimates the first certification exam will be available in two years. Dr. Weisberg anticipates the opportunity to become officially certified in the newest subspecialty recognized by the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Medical Specialties.
