The Importance of Skin Cancer Screening
When it comes to skin cancer, the earlier you can catch it, the better. As reported by the
Skin Cancer Foundation, “The risk of dying from the disease, in fact, is directly related to
the depth of the cancer, which is directly related to the amount of time it has been
growing unnoticed.” In other words, the longer skin cancer exists, the longer it grows,
and the longer it grows, the harder it is to treat. For this reason, skin cancer screening
exists to help patients catch the cancer as soon as possible. Skin cancer screening can be
an important, even life‐saving, service.
What Is Skin Cancer Screening?
When you come into our office for a skin cancer screening, here is what you can expect:
the professional examination and advice of a trained skin cancer specialist. We visually
inspect your skin to see if there are any potentially cancerous areas and determine
whether or not those areas require treatment. The process does not require blood work
and is fairly straightforward—nonetheless, it can make all the difference in spotting
cancer early.
How Common Is Skin Cancer?
The hard truth is that skin cancer is the most common cancer in America today,
affecting one in five people, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Skin
cancer can affect men or women, people of any race or skin color, at a wide range of
ages. The two most common types of cancer (basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell
carcinoma) have a 95 percent cure rate when spotted early and treated.
For the best prevention against skin cancer development, it’s important to regularly
check your own skin as well as to come in for a screening yearly.
